El-Rufai to remain in ICPC custody over bail terms

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). This follows his inability to immediately fulfill the bail conditions set by a Federal High Court in Kaduna.
Justice Rilwanu Aikawa granted the former governor bail in the corruption case instituted against him by the commission. However, the judge ruled that El-Rufai must stay in custody until all requirements are met.
Ally describes bail conditions as outrageous
Hayatudeen Lawal Makarfi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and close ally of the former governor, criticized the court’s decision. He described the bail terms as excessively difficult and “outrageous” for the embattled politician.
According to Makarfi, the conditions include a ₦200 million bond and the provision of landed properties. The court also required a surety who must hold a traditional title, among nearly ten other strict conditions.
ICPC continues trial over corruption allegations
The trial marks a significant development in the legal battles facing the former governor since leaving office. The ICPC is investigating various allegations of financial impropriety during his eight-year tenure in Kaduna.
Supporters of the former governor have gathered around the court, awaiting further updates on his legal status. Legal experts suggest that fulfilling these stringent terms may take several days, keeping the politician behind bars for the time being.
