El-Rufai moves from EFCC to ICPC custody

Inter-agency transfer in N432 billion probe
The investigation into the tenure of Nasir El-Rufai has taken a fresh dimension as he was moved from the EFCC to the ICPC.
The former Kaduna State Governor had been in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for several days over an alleged N432 billion fraud. Sources indicate that the transfer to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission is to allow for a broader probe into “systemic” corruption.
El-Rufai is facing intense questioning regarding the “Urban Renewal Projects” and several multi-billion naira loans obtained by his administration. The Kaduna State House of Assembly had earlier indicted the former governor, claiming that thousands of hectares of land were diverted for private use. This inter-agency move suggests that the authorities are digging deeper into the “astronomical” irregularities found in the state’s financial records.
Legal battle over bail and detention
The former governor’s legal team has described his continued detention as “oppressive” and a violation of his fundamental rights. They argued that their client is a “responsible citizen” who honored the invitation voluntarily and should not be treated like a common criminal. Despite their efforts, the anti-graft agencies have maintained an “unapproachable” stance, insisting that the gravity of the allegations warrants a thorough interrogation.
His lawyer, Mustapha, noted that the former governor is “presumed innocent” until a competent court of law proves otherwise. He expressed hope that the ICPC will be more transparent in its dealings than the EFCC, which he accused of playing a “hide and seek” game with his client’s freedom. The political atmosphere remains charged as supporters of the embattled politician continue to cry foul.
Political tensions rise in the APC and beyond
Many analysts believe that the ordeal of Nasir El-Rufai is not disconnected from the shifting alliances within the All Progressives Congress. As a major player in the party, his removal from the scene could have a “ripple effect” on the 2027 presidential race. Some believe that the “powers that be” are using the anti-graft agencies to settle old political scores.
The ICPC has not officially released a statement on the specific charges that the former governor is currently facing in their custody. However, they have promised to carry out their duties without fear or favor, regardless of the individual’s political status. For now, the “Special One” of Kaduna politics remains in a “tight corner” as the investigators “flesh out” more evidence against him.
