On Tuesday, March 18, President Bola Tinubu made a huge announcement: he declared a state of emergency in Rivers State because of the ongoing political crisis there.
In a speech to the nation, President Tinubu said he was “greatly disturbed about the political crisis” in Rivers and accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of destroying the State House of Assembly building. After evaluating the situation, Tinubu declared that a state of emergency would be in place starting from March 18.
This news came after a key meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, which took place around 3 p.m. The meeting included important leaders like the service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
As part of the emergency measures, Governor Fubara has been suspended for six months. This decision is aimed at restoring peace and order in Rivers State.
