BREAKING: Nigerian lawmakers approve Tinubu’s tax reform bills

On Thursday, March 13, the Nigerian House of Representatives approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform bills after months of heated debate and controversy.
This development was confirmed by presidential spokesperson and Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, through a statement on his official X account. He shared that the bills were successfully passed by the Green Chamber after extensive discussions.
“Tax reform bills have been approved by Nigeria’s House of Representatives today in Abuja. Today, March 13, 2025,” Dare wrote.
The approval comes despite the ongoing controversy surrounding Tinubu’s tax reform proposals. Notably, the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum had previously rejected the bill, particularly the proposed value-added tax derivation model in the Nigeria Tax Bill. Additionally, the National Economic Council also opposed this model.
It’s worth remembering that on October 3, 2024, President Tinubu sent four tax reform bills to the National Assembly, including the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
