Denmark condemns Trump’s rhetoric on Greenland

On Thursday, March 27, the Danish government strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s recent harsh comments about Greenland and praised the people of Greenland for their resilience in the face of US pressure.

Trump, who has long expressed interest in taking control of Greenland—a semi-autonomous Danish territory—reiterated his position during a press conference on Wednesday. He argued that the US needs the strategically important island for both national and international security.

“We need Greenland, and the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark,” Trump told reporters.

In response, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described Trump’s statements as an escalation and said such comments were inappropriate for a close ally. “I need to clearly speak out against what I see as an escalation from the American side. The tightened rhetoric is in every way far-fetched,” he said.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit the US military base at Pituffik in northern Greenland on Friday. However, an earlier plan for his wife, Usha Vance, to attend a popular dog-sled race was canceled following protests from locals.
