De Bruyne criticizes FIFA and UEFA for prioritizing money over player welfare
Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has expressed his frustration with the demanding fixture schedule for the current season. The Belgian is concerned about the sheer volume of matches players will face.
In particular, De Bruyne has targeted FIFA and UEFA for their decision to increase the number of fixtures. Speaking to Mundo Deportivo on Friday, September 6, the former Chelsea player criticized the organizations for placing financial gain above the well-being of athletes.
De Bruyne’s Manchester City team is set to compete across various competitions organized by FIFA, UEFA, and the English FA this season. The 33-year-old midfielder accused these governing bodies of valuing revenue over player welfare.
He remarked, “Maybe this year everything will be fine, but next year it will be a problem. The PFA in England and players’ associations in other countries have tried to find solutions.
“The problem is that UEFA and FIFA are doing extra matches and we can try to say something, but no solution has been found. They don’t care. Money speaks for them.
“I think the real problem will come when we finish the Club World Cup. We know that between the final of the Club World Cup and the first day of the Premier League only three weeks will pass.
“So we have three weeks off and to get ready to play another 80 games later,” he added.
