Customs suspends 4% FOB levy, importers and brokers asked to refile entries

On Monday, February 24, 2025, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced the suspension of the 4% Free on Board (FOB) import levy that was previously applied to cargoes arriving in Nigeria. This decision came after concerns were raised by importers and industry stakeholders.
In a statement signed by Mr. Abdullahi Maiwada, Assistant Comptroller of Customs and NCS Spokesman, the agency explained that this move aims to provide clarity, maintain consistency in operations, and avoid any disruptions in the clearance process.
Importers, customs agents, and other stakeholders who were affected by the levy have been instructed to refile their import declarations in order to continue clearing their goods. The statement reads: “All stakeholders affected are urged to promptly recapture their entries through the designated customs processing platforms. The NCS has put measures in place to ensure this process is seamless. Customs Commands nationwide have been directed to provide the necessary assistance and clarifications to importers and agents requiring support during this period.”
This change aligns with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and emphasizes the importance of ongoing dialogue and consultation with stakeholders.
The Customs Service reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and efficiency in its operations, urging traders to promptly refile their entries to avoid delays in clearing their consignments. This move highlights the agency’s effort to implement government fiscal policies effectively while minimizing disruptions to trade.
