Customs cautions Nigerians against violating US visa conditions

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a warning to Nigerians, urging them to avoid breaching the terms of their U.S. entry visas.

This caution was conveyed by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja by the service’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada.

Adeniyi stated that the advisory follows concerns raised by the Government of the United States regarding the misuse of entry visas by some Nigerian nationals. He explained that such misuse often involves engaging in activities that are inconsistent with the visa’s stated purpose and classification.

“Nigerians are urged to note that security vetting for visa applicants does not end upon entry into the U.S.,” Adeniyi warned. “U.S. authorities will continuously monitor the activities of visa holders, and visas can be revoked if holders are found to have violated U.S. immigration protocols, import/export guidelines, or other laws.”

The Customs chief also reminded travelers of the mandatory declaration of cash exceeding $10,000 or its equivalent when entering or exiting Nigeria. He said this measure is in place to ensure compliance with international standards and prevent the smuggling of prohibited items.

He called on all Nigerian passengers to be law-abiding, both at home and abroad, stressing that individuals found guilty of fraud or illegal conduct would face legal consequences under both U.S. and Nigerian laws.

Adeniyi further disclosed that the NCS is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria meets the necessary compliance standards, thereby avoiding inclusion in any expanded U.S. visa ban list.

“The goal is to protect the interests of law-abiding Nigerians who wish to travel to the United States for legitimate business or personal purposes,” he said.
