Rivers state awaits briefing on supreme court ruling, urges calm

The Rivers State Government has stated that it is awaiting a comprehensive briefing on the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling concerning state allocation and local government administration before deciding on its next steps.

In a statement on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, assured residents that the government would carefully assess the ruling once it receives detailed information. He urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue with their daily activities while the government seeks further clarity on the judgment.

Johnson also addressed concerns regarding the defection of 27 lawmakers, clarifying that the matter was not before the Supreme Court and is currently pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. He stated that, since the issue of defection was not ruled on by the Supreme Court, Martin Amaewhule and the 26 other lawmakers are still recognized as legislators until the Federal High Court delivers its verdict.

As part of its ruling, the Supreme Court directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other relevant agencies to withhold funds from the Rivers State Government. The court accused the state of flagrant disobedience to court orders and stated that it must comply before receiving further allocations.

The Rivers State Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the state’s best interests as it navigates the legal and financial implications of the ruling.
