Children’s Day: Bauchi speaker urges urgent action to end child abuse, trafficking

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Dr. Abubakar Suleiman, called on government bodies, non-profit organizations, and human rights activists to step up their efforts in combating child abuse and trafficking throughout the state.

Addressing the urgent need for collective responsibility, Dr. Suleiman stressed, “Governments, non-profit organizations, and human rights activists must be actively involved whenever cases of child abuse or maltreatment are identified.”

He further emphasized the importance of legal accountability: “As custodians of the law, we must ensure that traffickers, abusers, and offenders face the full wrath of the law. This will serve as a deterrent to others.”

The Speaker also appealed directly to parents and guardians, urging them to provide unwavering love, care, and support to their children. “Children are gifts from Almighty God and should be treated with utmost love and concern,” he said. “Parents must ensure children’s basic needs are met and that they are not left to fend for themselves or sent far away without proper provisions.”

Highlighting the significance of community backing, Dr. Suleiman urged families not to abandon victims of abuse or rape, emphasizing the crucial role of support in the healing process.

He also noted the legislative strides made by the Bauchi State House of Assembly: “We have passed several child-centered bills, which have been assented to by Governor Bala Mohammed. We remain committed to the welfare, protection, and support of children in Bauchi State. We will continue to collaborate and make laws that improve the living conditions of children in the state and across the country.”
