Chelsea suffer injury blow as Romeo Lavia ruled out of Club World Cup semi-final against Fluminense

Chelsea have been dealt a fresh injury setback ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final clash with Brazilian side Fluminense on Tuesday, July 8, as midfielder Romeo Lavia has been ruled out due to a muscle injury.

Blues manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the Belgian’s absence during a pre-match press conference on Monday, July 7. Lavia sustained the injury during Chelsea’s Round of 16 win over Benfica and subsequently missed their quarter-final victory against Palmeiras.

“Romeo is training already but is unfortunately not training with us, so is not ready for tomorrow,” Maresca told reporters.

The 21-year-old has struggled with injuries since joining Chelsea and has yet to find consistent fitness. His continued absence comes as a blow for Maresca, who is preparing for his first major tournament with the club.

The winner of the Chelsea–Fluminense tie will advance to the final of the Club World Cup, with both sides eyeing their first title in the competition.
