CAN pays tribute to Imam Abdullahi for saving 262 Christians from terrorists

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, who saved the lives of 262 Christians during a terrorist attack in 2018.
In a statement, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh described the late Imam’s actions as a profound testament to courage, compassion, and shared humanity. “By choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre, standing firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most,” the statement read.
CAN said Imam Abdullahi’s heroism transcended religious boundaries, reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded the nation that peace is possible when conscience, love, and faith guide actions.
The association noted that the Imam had been honoured during CAN’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021 and urged continued recognition of his legacy. “We call for engagement with his family and broad public recognition of his noble sacrifice, so that his story may inspire unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across our nation,” the statement added.
CAN extended condolences to his family and community, celebrating a life lived in service to God and humanity, saying his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders and generations to come.
