CAN congratulates Pope Leo XIV, first American pontiff

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated the Roman Catholic Church on the historic election of Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever American pope.

In a statement released on Friday, May 9, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh called the election a moment of renewal and hope for Catholics around the world.

“The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church,” Archbishop Okoh said.
“CAN is confident that the new Pontiff will advance peace, justice, and inclusiveness, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.”

He also offered prayers for the new pope, saying:
“CAN prays that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate be blessed with wisdom, good health, and strength to lead God’s people on the path of righteousness. May God guide and strengthen him in his ministry.”

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old from the United States and former Superior General of the Augustinians, was elected as the 267th pope. He succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.

The new pope took the name Leo XIV and was introduced to the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica as Cardinal Dominique Mamberti declared, “Habemus Papam!” to the cheering crowds in St. Peter’s Square.
