CAN confirms 215 pupils, 12 teachers abducted from Niger Catholic school

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Niger State chapter, has confirmed that 215 pupils and 12 teachers were abducted during Friday’s attack on St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

Report had it how armed terrorists stormed the school in the early hours of Friday, taking students and staff away in large numbers.

The incident triggered widespread concern and calls for urgent government intervention.

In a statement issued after an on-the-spot assessment visit to the school, the state CAN chairman, Bulus Yohanna, said efforts were underway to ensure the safe return of all abducted persons.

“I have just got back to the village this night after I visited the school, where I also met with parents of the children to assure them that we are working with the government and security agencies to see that our children are rescued and brought back safely,” Mr Yohanna told reporters.

He further disclosed that some students managed to escape during the attack, and parents have been returning to retrieve their wards as the school has been closed indefinitely.

“It is worthy to note that during the terrorist attack, some students escaped, and parents have started coming to pick up their children, as the school has to be shut down.”

Calling for calm, Mr Yohanna urged Nigerians to remain prayerful while assuring that collaborative efforts are ongoing with security agencies, community leaders and government authorities for the speedy rescue of the abducted children and staff.

“I want to call on everyone to remain calm and prayerful, and I also want to assure you that we are actively collaborating with security operatives, community leaders and government authorities for the safe and quick return of all abductees.”
