Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti sentenced to one year for tax fraud

Carlo Ancelotti, the current head coach of the Brazil national football team, has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud related to his time managing Real Madrid in 2014, according to a report by The Sun UK.

The Italian coach was found guilty of concealing income connected to his image rights during his first spell at Real Madrid. However, he was acquitted of other tax-related offences from 2015, also linked to his image rights earnings at the club.

Despite the prison sentence, Ancelotti is unlikely to serve jail time. Under Spanish law, non-violent offenders sentenced to less than two years who have no prior convictions usually avoid incarceration.

Ancelotti’s tax case centers on accusations that he misled Spanish tax authorities to avoid paying over £833,000 in income tax. The 66-year-old has strongly denied any wrongdoing but has a history of underpaying tax.

Ancelotti managed Real Madrid from 2013 to 2016 before coaching Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and then returning to Madrid in 2021. He left Real Madrid again this year to become Brazil’s head coach.
