Billboard predicts Tems could make history as first African to win two Grammys in one night

Nigerian R&B sensation Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, is on the brink of making history. According to Billboard, she could become the first African artist to win two Grammy Awards in one night at the upcoming ceremony.

Tems is nominated in three categories at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, which will take place on Sunday, February 2nd, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Her nominations include Best African Music Performance for her hit “Love Me Jeje,” Best Global Music Album for Born In The Wild, and Best R&B Song for “Burning.”

Billboard predicts that Tems will win two of these prestigious awards. For Best African Music Performance, she is expected to take home the trophy for “Love Me Jeje,” which samples Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 song of the same title. She’s up against tough competition, including “Tomorrow” by Yemi Alade, “MMS” by Asake & Wizkid, “Sensational” by Chris Brown (featuring Davido & Lojay), and Burna Boy’s “Higher.” While Billboard believes “Sensational” is worth watching, they also noted Burna Boy’s “Higher” as a strong contender, thanks to his impressive track record.

Tems is also predicted to win Best Global Music Album with Born In The Wild, her debut album. The other nominees in this category include “Alkebulan II” by Matt B featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, “Paisajes” by Ciro Hurtado, “Heis” by Rema, and “Historias De Un Flamenco” by Antonio Rey. Tems stands out as the only previous Grammy winner in this category.

Despite the predictions, Billboard cautioned that the Grammys are always full of surprises, so the actual results could be different from expectations.

Trevor Noah will return as the host for the fifth time, and Beyoncé leads this year’s nominations with an impressive eleven nods.

The Grammy Awards ceremony is shaping up to be an exciting event, with Tems standing at the forefront of what could be a historic night for African music.
