Bayelsa dominates medal table at Gateway Games as Delta and Rivers trail behind

Team Bayelsa continued to assert its dominance at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun, maintaining a strong lead on the medals table as of Friday, May 23.
The state has so far secured an impressive 30 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze medals—keeping them firmly in first place five days into the competition.
According to the official medals table for the NSF, branded Gateway Games 2024, Team Delta is currently in second place with 21 gold, nine silver, and 26 bronze medals, showing consistent performance but still trailing Bayelsa by a notable margin.
Team Rivers occupies the third spot with 11 gold, 10 silver, and 10 bronze medals, while Team Oyo sits in fourth place after clinching 10 gold, eight silver, and 13 bronze. Completing the top five is Team Lagos, which has earned nine gold, nine silver, and 18 bronze medals.
So far, a total of 420 medals have been awarded across various sporting events at the national competition, which continues to draw vibrant performances from athletes across the country.
The festival, which has also seen its share of off-field drama—including a reported explosion at the Alake Sports Centre—remains a showcase of Nigeria’s grassroots athletic talent and state pride.
