Bayelsa agog as Governor Douye Diri formally joins APC amid massive rally

Thousands gather in Yenagoa to witness Diri’s defection to the ruling party
The political atmosphere in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, was electrified on Monday as thousands of supporters gathered to witness the formal defection of Governor Douye Diri from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development marks a dramatic political realignment in the oil-rich South-South state, long considered a PDP stronghold since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
By joining the APC, Governor Diri has put an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his political future, sending ripples through both state and national political circles ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A carnival-like atmosphere despite heavy downpour
As early as 8:00 a.m., supporters began trooping into Yenagoa from all eight local government areas of the state. Many were dressed in white T-shirts emblazoned with APC colours and slogans celebrating the governor’s defection.
Despite an early morning downpour, the mood remained festive. Groups of drummers and dancers took over major streets, waving party flags and singing solidarity songs in both English and Ijaw dialects.
By 10:00 a.m., the Samson Siasia Sports Stadium, the venue of the official ceremony, was filled to capacity. The 5,000-seat arena overflowed with jubilant party faithful, prompting security personnel to temporarily restrict entry to prevent overcrowding and ensure safety.
Witnesses described the scene as “historic,” comparing the turnout to some of the state’s largest political gatherings in recent years.
Top political figures grace the occasion
The event drew several high-profile dignitaries from across the South-South and beyond. Among those who arrived in Yenagoa to witness the defection were:
-
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State
-
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State
-
Former Delta Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa
-
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State
-
Former Edo State Governor and APC chieftain, Adams Oshiomhole
-
Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh
Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion, which political analysts believe could reshape alliances within the region and influence the balance of power heading into the next election cycle.
Diri’s defection ends months of speculation
Governor Diri’s decision to switch parties follows months of political tension and speculation about his strained relationship with some PDP leaders both within and outside Bayelsa.
Although he has not yet publicly detailed his reasons for leaving the PDP, sources close to the governor cited differences over internal party structures, control of local chapters, and alignment with federal interests as contributing factors.
By joining the ruling APC, Diri is expected to work more closely with the federal government to attract development projects to Bayelsa — a move his supporters have hailed as “strategic and people-oriented.”
Political observers say the defection could also bolster the APC’s presence in the South-South region, where the party has struggled to make significant inroads in previous election cycles.
APC leaders welcome Diri, call for unity
Speaking at the event, senior APC officials described Governor Diri’s entry into the party as “a major victory” and called for unity among members.
An APC National Working Committee representative, who addressed the crowd, said:
“Governor Diri’s decision to join us is a clear sign that the APC remains the only national party committed to progress, stability, and inclusiveness. Bayelsa is now firmly aligned with the centre, and we will work together to deliver prosperity to our people.”
Supporters cheered as party leaders hoisted the APC flag and officially welcomed Diri into the fold.
Security measures and crowd control
Given the size of the crowd, security agencies — including the Nigeria Police Force, Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilante groups — were deployed across Yenagoa to maintain order.
Roads leading to the stadium were partially cordoned off, and vehicular movement was redirected to alternate routes. No major security incidents were reported as of press time.
Analysts react to Diri’s political move
Political commentators say Diri’s defection could have far-reaching implications for Bayelsa politics and the PDP’s influence in the Niger Delta region.
Dr. Ayodele Obadiah, a political science lecturer at the Niger Delta University, described the move as “both symbolic and strategic.”
“For years, Bayelsa has been a PDP bastion. Diri’s defection could embolden other state leaders to realign with the ruling party, particularly if they see tangible benefits for their constituencies,” he said.
However, opposition voices argue that the defection may spark internal rifts within the APC, especially among existing party loyalists who have long aspired to the state’s top seat.
