Group urges respect for Nigerian leaders and condemns abusive language

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Association of Arewa Yoruba Youths (AAYY) called on Nigerians to show respect for political leaders and avoid using disrespectful language that could harm the country’s reputation.
AAYY National Coordinator, Ambassador Lawal Hussein Taiye, shared his concerns in a statement, urging the public to maintain decorum in public discussions. He emphasized that showing respect for leaders reflects well on the country and boosts its image internationally.
“We must learn to respect those occupying sensitive positions in the country. By doing so, we not only uphold our dignity but also project a positive image of Nigeria to the international community,” said Hussein. He added, “Many Nigerians engage in behaviors that undermine the country’s credibility. How can we expect foreigners to take Nigeria seriously when its citizens fail to show responsibility in national affairs?”
Hussein also criticized the negative portrayal of leaders in the media, particularly social and electronic platforms, calling the trend “disturbing.” He pointed out that both of Nigeria’s major religions teach respect and maturity when addressing issues.
The AAYY leader specifically condemned an activist who made insulting remarks about the President, labeling them as unacceptable. “We should respect our leaders and pray for their success instead of resorting to insults,” Hussein said.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the North Central Development Commission, calling it a strategic step towards regional development. He also urged the President to include youth representatives in the commission’s appointments to ensure active participation in governance.
Hussein expressed his support for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, praising the improvements made in the Nigerian Police Force under his leadership. He encouraged Nigerians to provide vital information to support security efforts in the country.
“The IGP has done commendable work, and he deserves the support of all Nigerians. The position of the Inspector General of Police is an appointive role at the discretion of the President, and it is crucial for Nigerians to assist security agencies in overcoming longstanding security challenges,” he stated.
Finally, the group took issue with remarks attributed to a former governor of Kaduna State, urging him to approach the situation in Nigeria with fairness and understanding.
