APC using state resources to destabilise opposition, says Labour Party faction leader Nenadi Usman

The Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weaponising state institutions and resources to create divisions within opposition parties.
Usman made the remarks during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Global Award and Dinner Night held in Abuja, where she urged coalition partners and opposition leaders to make the necessary sacrifices to prevent President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
According to the former senator, the APC has engaged in deliberate efforts to weaken opposition parties through infiltration, harassment, and manipulation of state institutions.
“Since the emergence of the APC as the ruling party, there has been a deliberate and relentless campaign to undermine the opposition,” she said.
“Tactics range from infiltration and co-optation to the use of state institutions for harassment, intimidation, and even judicial manipulation. The ruling party has become adept not just at consolidating power but at weakening every form of challenge to it. This is not democracy. This is domination masked as governance.”
Usman, represented at the event by her Senior Special Adviser (Media), Ken Eluma Asogwa, called on opposition parties to close ranks and set aside internal disputes, warning that division within the ranks of the opposition only strengthens the ruling party.
“While external interference from the APC has played a role, it is not the only culprit,” she admitted. “The opposition has too often been complicit in its own weakening. Personal ambition, greed, and internal divisions have made us vulnerable. No amount of external sabotage can succeed if there is no internal decay.”
Usman stressed the importance of unity among opposition groups, noting that democracy depends on dissent and the provision of credible alternatives to the ruling government.
“Democracy thrives not through silence or submission but through robust debate, critique, and the offering of credible alternatives,” she said, urging her colleagues in opposition to move beyond self-interest and present a united front for the sake of the country.
