APC national secretary urges INEC to deregister ADC over viability concerns

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over the party’s viability.

Basiru made the call on Friday during an interview on Arise Television, where he argued that Nigeria’s electoral process should not be burdened by political parties that fail to meet required standards.

He maintained that ballot papers should not be overcrowded with parties that lack electoral strength, noting that although Nigeria has about 19 registered political parties, not all are active or competitive.

According to him, the call for deregistration is based on constitutional provisions which empower INEC to remove parties that do not meet specific performance thresholds in elections.

Basiru stressed that the APC’s position is not about silencing opposition but about ensuring compliance with the law and maintaining an efficient electoral system.

He also referenced ongoing legal actions surrounding the ADC, expressing confidence that INEC has sufficient grounds to act within its powers.

The APC chieftain further criticised what he described as the party’s limited political impact, suggesting that its activities generate more publicity than tangible electoral results.

His comments come amid growing scrutiny of opposition parties and ongoing debates over the structure and competitiveness of Nigeria’s multi-party system.
