APC backs Tinubu on 1999 constitution, urges protesters to shelve agitation
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu, stating that he lacks the power to unilaterally alter or dump the 1999 Constitution. This comes amidst plans for a nationwide protest calling for the President to scrap the constitution.
According to Senator Ajibola Basiru, National Secretary of the APC, President Tinubu alone cannot change the constitution in any form. Basiru emphasized that the President’s powers are limited in this regard.
The APC National Working Committee examined the 15 charter of demands outlined by the protest organizers and found that most issues raised are not grounds for protest. Senator Basiru noted that these issues are political in nature and would require constitutional amendments, rather than protests.
The party has urged protesters to shelve their agitation, emphasizing that President Tinubu had vowed to protect the constitution. The APC’s stance is that the President cannot unilaterally alter the constitution, making the protesters’ demands impossible to achieve.
