Akingboye’s son seeks IGP’s intervention over father’s ‘suspicious’ death

Samuel Akingboye, the first son of the late Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in Ondo State, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, has called on the Inspector-General of Police to directly oversee investigations into what he described as the “tragic and suspicious” death of his father.
In a statement issued in Akure and made available to Vanguard, Samuel demanded the immediate release of the autopsy report, CCTV footage, and full transparency from the Lagos State Police Command regarding the case.
He urged the police to comply with the directives of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and ensure integrity in handling the matter, alleging attempts to frustrate and divert the investigation.
Recounting the events of September 3, 2025, Samuel said he was informed by a family member about his father’s death but noticed injuries on the deceased’s body that contradicted the account given by those at the scene. He said inconsistent responses from his stepmother and stepbrothers heightened suspicion, prompting him to request an autopsy.
According to him, police officers initially faced resistance when they attempted to access the VGC residence where the incident occurred but later revisited the scene with reinforcements. The case was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.
Samuel claimed that recovered CCTV footage and autopsy findings indicated possible violent circumstances surrounding his father’s death. He also alleged that some of his father’s assets had been moved from the family home and said he had received death threats since pursuing the case.
He appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, civil society groups, and human rights organizations to intervene and ensure justice, stressing that his father “was not just a public figure, but a patriot who deserves truth and accountability.
