Afenifere urges probe into Natasha’s claims against Akpabio

Afenifere calls for full investigation into harassment allegations
The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the Nigerian Senate and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) to thoroughly investigate the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a public statement issued on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Afenifere stressed the importance of uncovering the truth to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy and restore public trust in the legislative arm of government.
“Truth must be established to protect Nigeria’s image” — Afenifere
Afenifere noted that the matter has drawn international attention, with global media and parliaments monitoring how Nigeria addresses the allegations. The group insists that justice should not be sacrificed on the altar of politics or parliamentary procedure.
“For us, restoring her [Natasha] does not mean we should put all her claims behind us without subjecting them to judicial interpretation,” Afenifere stated in its release.
The group warned that ignoring the matter could damage Nigeria’s international reputation, especially as many nations are now focusing on how African countries uphold human rights, gender equity, and parliamentary accountability.
Background: Natasha’s allegations and Senate’s reaction
In 2024, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, publicly accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. The allegations were followed by a six-month suspension from the Senate for what the chamber described as a “violation of Senate rules.”
During her suspension, many civil society groups and rights organizations criticized the Senate’s response, arguing that her suspension appeared retaliatory rather than procedural.
Following the expiration of her suspension, Senator Natasha resumed her duties earlier this month. However, Afenifere says her reinstatement does not close the chapter on the more serious allegations.
Afenifere presses AGF and security agencies to act
The group has now called on the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Senate leadership, and relevant security agencies to ensure that the truth is not buried.
“The allegations against the Senate President are serious and should not be swept under the carpet. The Senate must not appear complicit in protecting its own at the expense of justice,” the group noted.
Afenifere also urged female lawmakers, gender advocacy groups, and legal bodies to push for transparency and accountability, noting that failure to address the issue could set a dangerous precedent for women in public office.
Public reaction and implications for future governance
The situation continues to generate diverse reactions from the public. While some view Senator Natasha’s suspension as part of broader institutional sexism, others believe the matter should have been handled more discreetly.
Legal experts argue that if the matter is not properly investigated, it may erode confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to hold powerful public officers accountable.
