Abiodun swears in LG chairmen, vows to end tyranny, hooliganism
On Sunday, November 17, 2024, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State swore in the newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies, pledging to put an end to all forms of tyranny and hooliganism in the state. Speaking at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, the governor assured that anyone involved in the recent disturbances during the local government elections at Iperu-Remo would face the full force of the law, regardless of their status or influence.
Governor Abiodun condemned the violent disruptions during the election, particularly the actions of individuals who imported unauthorized security operatives to instigate chaos. He stated that such actions would not be tolerated under his administration. “I want to commend our law enforcement agencies for their efforts. Despite attempts to disrupt the elections, those plans were thwarted. The events in Iperu are under thorough investigation, and anyone found guilty—no matter their rank or influence—will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he declared.
The governor revealed that some individuals had hired thugs, hoodlums, and even unauthorized police officers to disrupt the election process, including an attack on the vice-chairman of a local government in his hometown. “As the Chief Security Officer of this state, I will not allow such impunity,” Abiodun vowed. “Those illegal policemen have been disarmed and are now in custody at Eleweran.”
Governor Abiodun emphasized that the era of hooliganism and thuggery must come to an end in Ogun State. He reiterated his commitment to maintaining peace and order, affirming that his administration would hold perpetrators accountable. “Enough is enough,” he added.
The governor also charged the newly elected chairmen with the responsibility of being fair and inclusive in their governance. “The elections are over, and you are now leaders for all,” he told them. “Be fair and just to everyone, and focus on delivering development to every corner of the state.”
He congratulated the new local government leaders and encouraged them to align their governance with the state’s ISEYA vision, which focuses on infrastructure, social development, education, youth empowerment, and agriculture. “God has chosen you for this responsibility, not because you are better than others, but because it pleases Him,” Abiodun said, urging them to serve with dedication and integrity.
At the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta, where the swearing-in ceremony took place, the governor reminded the chairmen that their positions gave them a unique opportunity to impact the lives of the people at the grassroots level. He urged them to align with the state’s development agenda and embrace innovation to generate revenue for the growth of their councils.
Abiodun also highlighted the importance of security at the local government level, urging the chairmen to collaborate with security agencies, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to maintain peace in their areas. “Mentor future leaders and sustain your legacies,” he challenged them.
Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the newly sworn-in chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Hon. Olasile Odulate, thanked the governor and the people of Ogun for the trust placed in them. He pledged that the local government chairmen would uphold the principles of good governance and deliver impactful leadership to their communities.
Governor Abiodun’s message signals a strong stance against political violence and underlines his commitment to good governance and development in Ogun State.
