Planting in dumpsites could lead to cancer – MOUAU Professor
A Professor of Soil Science at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), Mabel Ifeoma Onwuka has warned farmers against planting crops at dumpsites, citing cancer and health risks.
The outreach program aims to boost food production and promote sustainable farming practices. Prof. Onwuka urges farmers to leverage MOUAU’s community services and innovations.
The soil science professor went ahead to teach the women farmers about biochar production, and then showed them how to convert waste to organic fertilizer.
Factors like bush burning, population pressure, and climate change harm soil health, leading to poor yields. Heavy metals in dumpsites can cause cancer and other health issues.
The professor’s warning highlights the importance of soil conservation and safe farming practices for food security and public health.
