Minimum Wage: Ajaero, Osifo lead Labour delegation to Tinubu as talks intensify

Festus Osifo, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) President and Joe Ajaero, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, as well as other labour leaders, met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa at 2 pm on Thursday, July 11.

They were ushered in by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Labour leaders appealed to President Tinubu to grant workers a “living wage”, considering the current economic challenges, saying that the current minimum wage has been eroded by inflation and that workers are struggling to make ends meet.

The meeting comes after Tinubu announced widespread consultations on the ongoing minimum wage debate. The 37-man Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage had earlier failed to reach an agreement between the Federal Government and Organized Labour.

FG, the state governments, and the organized private sector have proposed N62,000, while Labour is insisting on N250,000.

As the meeting concludes, all eyes are on President Tinubu’s next move, with labour leaders hoping for a positive response to their demands and workers across the country waiting anxiously for a wage that truly reflects the value of their labour.
