Euro 2024: Germany sees off Hungary, books place in knockout stage
Host Germany qualified for the knockout stage of Euro 2024 on Wednesday, June 19, after defeating Hungary 2-0.
The Germans have amassed six points from their two matches which made them automatically through to the next stage.
The homers opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the first half through Jamal Musiala. Ilkay Gundogan played a neat ball into the path of Musiala, who made room for a shot and fired in off the crossbar.
Four minutes later, Dominik Szoboszlai released a promising shot from a free-kick on the edge of the box. His effort towards the top left corner was comfortably saved by Manuel Neuer.
Germany doubled their lead in the 67th minute of the match. Maximilian Mittelstadt teed up Gundogan inside the box, and he kept his cool to find the bottom right corner.
A snap shot by Leroy Sane 78 minutes into the match from the edge of the area flew towards the bottom left corner, but Peter Gulacsi produced a good save to thwart him.
In the 90th minute, Willi Orban was the first to arrive to a rebound inside the penalty area and unleashed a quick strike towards the middle of the target that beat the keeper. One of the defenders, however, made a goal-line clearance.
