Wike says Supreme Court ruling ends impunity in Rivers State

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has praised the Supreme Court for ending what he called “impunity” in Rivers State.

Wike made the statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday, February 28, 2025, which nullified the recent local government elections in Rivers State and upheld the legitimacy of the 27-member Martin Amaewhule-led State Assembly.

He believes the decision from the highest court has brought an end to the era of lawlessness in Rivers State.

The FCT minister also criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, accusing them of supporting the unlawful actions in Rivers State.

Wike emphasized that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has no choice but to fully comply with the Supreme Court’s decision, as it represents the final legal authority on the matter.

The ruling marks a significant development in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, reinforcing the authority of the Amaewhule-led Assembly while nullifying the controversial local government elections.
