Pope Francis still not out of danger, doctor provides update on pontiff’s health

Pope Francis’ personal doctor, Sergio Alfieri, has warned that the 88-year-old pontiff is “not out of danger” despite recent reports of slight improvement in his condition.

Alfieri, who has been overseeing the Pope’s treatment, confirmed on Friday that the Catholic leader remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Pope Francis was admitted on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties, and he has been undergoing treatment for double pneumonia.

Addressing the media, Alfieri emphasized the Pope’s desire for complete transparency regarding his health, stating, “He wants his condition reported to the world without hiding anything.”

The doctor further clarified that while the Pope’s situation is serious, it is not life-threatening. He explained, “Is he out of danger? No. But if the question is, ‘Is he in danger of death?’ the answer is ‘no.’”

Despite showing slight improvement, Pope Francis’ recovery is expected to take time. Alfieri confirmed that the pontiff will remain in the hospital “at least all next week,” as his medical team continues to monitor his condition closely, which can fluctuate “day-by-day.”

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni provided a positive update on Thursday, stating that the Pope had slept well, enjoyed breakfast while seated in an armchair, and his recent blood tests indicated a “slight improvement.” Nevertheless, Alfieri’s statement underscores the need for continued caution regarding the Pope’s health.
