Trump hosts Japanese PM amid rising trade tensions

On Friday, February 7, 2025, President Donald Trump welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to the White House.

The meeting comes as both countries, concerned about China’s growing influence, aim to strengthen their business and security ties, even as a growing trade war threatens the global economy.

“We love Japan!” Trump exclaimed as he shook hands with Prime Minister Ishiba.

While Trump’s early days in office were marked by bold and unconventional moves, his approach with longstanding Asia-Pacific allies, including Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, has been more traditional.

A senior Trump administration official revealed that the two leaders would focus on discussions about military training exercises, enhancing defense equipment and technology cooperation, foreign investment, and energy. The talks will also cover cybersecurity, space exploration, and joint opportunities in the artificial intelligence and semiconductor industries.

“We are proud of our long and close alliance with Japan. Our two nations will continue to work together to ensure we deter threats in the region through our full range of military capabilities,” the official said.
