Ini Edo opens up about surrogacy choice after struggling with pregnancy complications
Nollywood actress Ini Edo has shared the personal reason behind her decision to opt for surrogacy instead of carrying a pregnancy herself. The actress revealed this during an episode of the ongoing season 3 of the Young Famous and African reality show.
During a conversation with her co-stars, Ini Edo spoke candidly about her child’s paternity and her journey to motherhood. Responding to questions about her daughter and her personal life, she explained that she had faced difficulties carrying pregnancies to term.
When asked by her co-star Nadia, “Do you have a kid?” Ini Edo responded, “Yes, a baby girl.”
Nadia followed up, asking, “Are you married?” to which Ini Edo replied, “I’m not married.”
The conversation continued with Nadia asking if she was still in a relationship with her daughter’s father, to which Ini Edo said, “No I am not,” and confirmed that he was not part of their lives.
“I do not really want to talk about my journey because it is personal,” Ini Edo continued. “I’m raising my child alone. I went through surrogacy. There was no man in my life at the time I wanted to have a child, and there are different ways to go about that.”
The actress explained that she never anticipated facing fertility challenges, but had experienced several issues with carrying pregnancies long-term. “I never thought I would have fertility issues. But I have had issues carrying pregnancies long term. When it looked like it wasn’t going to happen and I wasn’t getting younger, I said, ‘What are the options available?’”
Ini Edo went on to reveal that she had undergone IVF treatments and had experienced six miscarriages before choosing surrogacy as the path to motherhood. She expressed that she was content with her decision, saying, “I am very happy with my decision.”
The 42-year-old actress, who was previously married to Nigerian-American businessman Philip Ehiagwina in 2008 before their divorce in 2014, is now raising her daughter as a single mother.
