NLC demands payment of minimum wage to Lagos media workers
On Monday, January 13, 2025, the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) called for the payment of the new minimum wage to workers at state-owned broadcast stations. The demand came during a protest by members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) in Lagos.
The unions were protesting the non-payment of the new minimum wage and their exclusion from the state’s Oracle payment system. Both unions had threatened to halt operations at Lagos Television, Radio Lagos/Eko FM, and Traffic Radio from January 13 unless their demands were met.
NLC Chairman Funmi Sessi emphasized, “You are workers of the state government, your letter of employment reads so, and you are entitled to the new minimum wage by the law of the Federal Government of Nigeria. You should not be paid less.”
She noted that the protesting workers were performing their duties well, helping to inform the public about the state government’s activities, yet they were not receiving the new wage.
“This is injustice to these workers,” Sessi said, urging Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene, describing him as someone with a lot of empathy.
