INEC seeks additional funding for 2027 general elections preparation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has requested additional funding from the Federal Government to support its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this known on Friday while defending the commission’s 2025 budget proposal before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

Prof. Yakubu emphasized that the funding is crucial to strengthen key areas of the commission’s operations. He outlined the priority areas requiring financial support, including the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, logistics for off-cycle elections, replacement of damaged election materials such as Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), ballot boxes, and voting cubicles, as well as the repair of INEC offices in various Local Government Areas.

According to Yakubu, 2025 is a pivotal year for laying the groundwork for a successful 2027 electoral process, and receiving timely funding will be essential to ensuring smooth and efficient operations. He reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s electoral process and strengthening democratic governance.

Meanwhile, INEC clarified reports suggesting plans to destroy over six million uncollected Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) dating back to the 2015 voter registration. The commission refuted the claims, stating, “The report is incorrect,” and confirmed that it never considered destroying uncollected PVCs

INEC continues to prioritize transparency and efficiency as it prepares for future electoral engagements.
