Transfer: Joe Hugill returns to Manchester United after loan spell at Wigan Athletic

Manchester United striker Joe Hugill has returned to the club following a six-month loan spell at League One side Wigan Athletic. The 21-year-old forward made a positive impact during his time at Wigan, scoring five goals in 18 appearances.

Hugill, who had featured in Manchester United’s pre-season win over Rangers, joined Wigan in the summer and was handed the number 9 shirt by manager Shaun Maloney. He also found the back of the net in Wigan’s 2-1 defeat to Wrexham in December.

His loan agreement included a recall clause, which has now been activated, bringing him back to Manchester United to continue his development under manager Ruben Amorim.

It remains unclear whether Hugill will secure regular playing time for Amorim’s side in the second half of the season, as Manchester United currently sits 13th in the Premier League with 23 points from 20 matches. Their next fixture is against Southampton on January 16.
