Nigeria’s Minister meets with telcos over proposed data and call tariff hikes

On Wednesday, January 8, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, held a meeting with representatives from major telecommunications companies amid growing pressure for a hike in call and data tariffs.

The meeting includes top telcos like MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom, 9Mobile, and others, with key stakeholders such as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) also expected to attend.

However, Andrew Agyo, a senior media member at the Ministry of Innovations and Digital Economy, could not confirm the meeting when asked, telling DAILY POST, “I am not aware of the meeting.”

Recently, MTN and Airtel had sent requests to the NCC seeking approval for new tariff increases. The telecommunications companies had previously warned that they may shut down the sector if their request for tariff hikes is not granted. Despite these calls, the NCC has not approved any new tariff hikes beyond the 2013 tariff price template.

Telecom subscribers have also voiced their concerns, urging the companies to explore other options instead of raising prices.
