Aba Power announces significant electricity tariff hike starting January 2025
Aba Power, the electricity distribution company serving Abia State, has officially announced a more than 50% increase in electricity tariffs for customers within its service area. This change, which took effect on Thursday, January 1, 2025, follows approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The company shared the news via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, explaining that the tariff adjustment comes in response to recent macroeconomic challenges faced by the company.
Under the new tariff structure, customers in Band A will now pay between N219.70 and N241.45 per kilowatt-hour, a significant increase from the previous rate of N99 per kWh. Those in Band B will be charged between N180.77 and N203 per kWh, while customers in Band C will see rates between N145 and N205 per kWh.
Aba Power explained that the price hike was necessary to address the impact of Nigeria’s ongoing economic realities on the company’s ability to provide quality services. “We also wish to inform you that we have recently received an approval order from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for an adjustment of electricity tariffs, effective January 1, 2025. This adjustment will enable us to cushion the effects of recent macroeconomic developments in Nigeria on our ability to continue to deliver a high quality of service to our customers in compliance with regulatory standards,” the company stated.
This latest tariff increase follows a similar adjustment by NERC in April of the previous year.
