Vandals destroy Shiroro-Katampe power line, plunge parts of Abuja Into darkness
Some areas in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have been plunged into darkness following the vandalization of the 330-kilovolt (kV) Shiroro-Katampe Transmission Line. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, disrupted power supply at approximately 11:43 PM, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
In a statement issued Thursday night, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah confirmed that vandals had stolen parts of the conductor between towers T216 and T218, causing the circuit to trip repeatedly despite initial restoration attempts.
“A TCN lines patrol team was dispatched from the Abuja Regional Office to investigate the fault. The team discovered that vandals had stolen part of the conductor between towers T216 and T218,” Mbah stated.
Efforts to restore power supply are underway, with TCN’s maintenance crew mobilized to replace the damaged conductor. Restoration is expected soon, Mbah said, while appealing to the public to report any suspicious activities near power transmission infrastructure.
The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the vandalism and reassured residents that measures were being taken to prevent future occurrences.
