Afe Babalola law firm partner Ogunwumiju files N500m defamation suit against Farotimi

On Thursday, December 6, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and managing partner at Afe Babalola & Co., filed a N500 million defamation lawsuit against Dele Farotimi. The suit is in response to alleged false and defamatory statements made in Farotimi’s book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.”

Ogunwumiju is seeking a court order to prevent the further publication and sale of the book, both in physical and online bookstores. He is also requesting damages of N500 million. According to the lawsuit, Ogunwumiju has asked for an injunction to stop Farotimi and any associated parties—such as publishers and distributors, including Amazon and other bookstores—from continuing to sell, distribute, or advertise the book.

The legal action demands that all copies of the book be seized and that Farotimi issue a public apology in two national newspapers.

In addition to this lawsuit, Farotimi was recently arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command on charges of defamation and cyberbullying in connection with allegations made against Afe Babalola. While Farotimi has been granted bail for the cybercrime charges, he still faces defamation charges.
