Kate Henshaw responds as police link hookup culture to rising ritual killings
Nigerian actress Kate Henshaw has revisited her controversial remarks on the dangers of hookup culture, following police reports tying it to ritual killings. The Ogun State Police Command recently revealed that many cases of missing young women are linked to such activities, sparking renewed public discourse.
Speaking on December 4, 2024, on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Ogun State Police PRO Omolola Odutola stated that “not less than 10 young girls and ladies go missing daily,” many of whom fall victim to harm or ritual killings through hookup arrangements. She described the practice as a significant contributor to the alarming trend.
The statement drew attention online, with some users recalling Henshaw’s October 2024 remarks about a young woman who publicly expressed interest in dating Yahoo boys (fraudsters). At the time, Henshaw warned that such choices could lead to the woman being “used for rituals,” a comment that sparked backlash. Critics accused the actress of insensitivity and implied justification of femicide.
Despite the criticism, some social media users have come to Henshaw’s defense following the police report. An X user wrote, “There was a time not too long ago @HenshawKate made a statement as regards this and some people came for her. Alas!!! She has been vindicated.”
Henshaw had defended her earlier stance, arguing that individuals must take responsibility for their actions and the risks they pose. “That’s the value she placed on herself with her words and actions,” she responded to critics.
The police report and renewed discussions underscore growing concerns over hookup culture, personal safety, and the role of societal values in curbing ritual killings.
