Rivers governor implements ₦85,000 minimum wage for civil servants
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has implemented an ₦85,000 minimum wage for state workers, providing much-needed relief amidst financial challenges. Announcing the development at the launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Emblem Appeal Fund in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the governor said the new wage structure increased workers’ salaries to between ₦120,000 and ₦140,000.
Fubara acknowledged the difficulties posed by those he described as “enemies of the state” trying to deprive his administration of funds but emphasized his commitment to improving workers’ welfare. He called the ability to uplift citizens’ lives the “greatest achievement in governance.”
The governor also pledged ₦40 million to the Nigerian Legion, doubling last year’s donation. As the son of a military officer, Fubara expressed deep empathy for the families of fallen heroes, promising continued support to ease their burdens.
Addressing concerns from the Nigerian Legion about unfulfilled promises of employment for children of fallen soldiers, Fubara explained that civil service recruitment is temporarily on hold as the state focuses on hiring professionals like teachers and doctors. He assured the legionnaires that the promised opportunities would be addressed soon.
Additionally, Fubara highlighted ongoing scholarship programs for Rivers indigenes, including support for students at PAMO University of Medical Sciences and Wigwe University, with plans to begin processing applications for further scholarships.
Before delivering his remarks, the governor led a minute’s silence in honor of the late Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, and the former Rivers State Legion chairman, Charles Hart.
