Poyet credits Maresca’s success at Chelsea to player maturity and injury-free season

Chelsea legend Gus Poyet has praised Enzo Maresca’s success at Stamford Bridge, attributing the Italian manager’s positive start to the growing maturity of his squad and a lack of injuries this season.

Maresca, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the summer of 2024, has helped Chelsea to an impressive record of 11 wins and just four defeats in 19 matches across all competitions so far this season.

In an interview with ChelseaNews.com on Monday, November 25, Poyet explained that the team’s improvement is linked to the experience gained by players who were previously too young and unfamiliar with the demands of the Premier League. “Two years ago, they were very, very young. They didn’t know the Premier League. They were coming into a different kind of lifestyle,” Poyet said.

He added, “We knew that most of them – not all – I would say 75% of them or 80% of them – two years later – they will be better.”

Poyet emphasized that Maresca’s arrival at Chelsea came at a time when the squad was more ready, compared to the situations under Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino. “That didn’t happen in the last two years because of the quantity of players and injuries,” Poyet explained.

He also noted that as players gain confidence and build momentum, they perform better. “The competition now is clear,” he concluded, highlighting the significance of consistency and confidence in driving the team forward this season.
