Manchester United to cut Ruben Amorim’s transfer budget following summer spending spree

Manchester United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, is set to work with a reduced transfer budget as he prepares for his first season in charge, The Telegraph reports on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Amorim, 39, who took over from Erik ten Hag following his sacking after a 2-1 loss to West Ham, held his first training session with the squad on Monday as he begins to prepare for his debut match at the helm this weekend.

Despite rumors that Amorim might seek to bring in some of his former players from Sporting CP, it now seems unlikely that he will be given the green light to pursue such transfers, especially after the club’s significant outlay in the summer transfer window under Ten Hag.

United’s summer spending exceeded £200 million, with new arrivals including Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, and Manuel Ugarte.

As a result of that high expenditure, United’s leadership has reportedly decided to scale back Amorim’s transfer budget for the upcoming January window, focusing instead on maximizing the potential of the current squad. Club officials are hopeful that Amorim can build on the existing team, putting an end to the costly cycle of frequent player overhauls that have plagued the club in recent years.
