Oluremi Tinubu urges market women to maintain stable food prices ahead of festive season
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on market women to avoid hiking food prices as the festive season approaches. She made the appeal on Saturday during the 2024 Women’s Day Celebration at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Addressing the gathering, Tinubu emphasized the need for fairness in food pricing to ease the burden on Nigerians during the Yuletide. She commended Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru for his support of women, particularly through appointments and empowerment programs.
As part of her visit, the First Lady inaugurated a 3.1-kilometer runway at the Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport in Onueke, describing the facility as a driver for increased economic activities and development in the state.
Tinubu also met with traditional rulers in Abakaliki, where she lauded the peaceful nature of Ebonyi and urged leaders to continue fostering unity and blessings for Nigeria. “Nigeria has everything it takes to be a great nation. We must continue to bless this land,” she stated.
Highlighting the state’s commitment to women’s inclusion, Tinubu praised Governor Nwifuru for exceeding the 35% benchmark for female appointments. “The deputy governor, Secretary to the State Government, and many others in leadership are women,” she noted.
Announcing empowerment initiatives, Tinubu revealed plans to provide ₦1 million business recapitalization grants to 130 individuals in Ebonyi. Additionally, her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) donated ₦50 million, 20,000 wrappers, shoes, and bags to support women entrepreneurs in the state.
Her visit reinforced the federal government’s commitment to gender inclusion, economic empowerment, and fostering peace across Nigeria.
