Residents in Taraba upset over rising price of sachet water
People in Jalingo, the capital city of Taraba State, are upset about the sharp rise in the price of sachet water and are calling on the state government to do something about it.
As of November 12, the price of one sachet of water has reached a shocking 50 Naira. This is much higher than the price in neighboring states like Adamawa and Gombe, where sachet water still sells for around 20 Naira, or sometimes two for 50 Naira.
Many people are frustrated and believe the price hike is unfair. They say the government should investigate the water distribution companies and find out why prices are so high in Jalingo. Some have even suggested that the government should speak with the chairman of the sachet water producers’ group to understand what’s going on.
Musa Ahmadu, a concerned resident, said, “It’s really unfortunate that the government hasn’t been checking the activities of sachet water producers here in Jalingo. The price is just too high, especially when people are already struggling with the cost of living.”
Ahmadu and other residents are asking the government to create rules that would stop companies from taking advantage of people. They want the government to make sure businesses are not raising prices without good reasons.
Some water producers, on the other hand, say the high price is due to the rising cost of petroleum products, which they say have made it more expensive to produce the water and materials needed to package it.
