Nigerian diplomat Akinyemi criticizes Trump’s re-election, calls it a ‘disgrace’ for the U.S.
Bolaji Akinyemi, a prominent Nigerian political scientist and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, criticized the United States for re-electing Donald Trump as president, describing the decision as a “disgrace.”
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Akinyemi expressed disappointment in the U.S. and claimed that the nation’s choice had “disappointed the rest of the world.”
Akinyemi, a respected professor of political science, noted that Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic opponent, had unsuccessfully tried to contact Trump to congratulate him, which he believes raises questions about Trump’s ability to unify a divided nation. “Do you know that Kamala Harris has been trying to get in touch with him to congratulate him, and she hasn’t succeeded? He hasn’t picked up her call,” Akinyemi stated.
Trump’s return to the presidency is historic; he is the first president in over a century to win a non-consecutive second term and the first convicted felon to be elected to the office. Facing a sentencing for fraud in New York on November 26, Trump, at 78, will also become the oldest president to assume office, surpassing President Joe Biden, who will leave office at 82 in January.
Akinyemi’s remarks come amid international scrutiny of Trump’s leadership as the world watches how he will navigate a deeply divided electorate and significant legal challenges.
