Graeme Souness brands Enzo Fernandez a ‘wasted signing’ for Chelsea
Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness has heavily criticized Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, calling the Argentine midfielder a “wasted signing” for the club.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-club-record fee of £106.8 million, has struggled to live up to expectations under Chelsea’s current management. The midfielder has seen his place in the team slip under Enzo Maresca, with his performances failing to justify his high price tag.
In an interview on Up Front’s YouTube channel, Souness didn’t hold back on his assessment of Chelsea’s spending spree since the club’s takeover by Todd Boehly and his consortium in 2022.
“There has been enormous wastage in the current group of players,” Souness stated, adding that many of the players signed by Chelsea will never reach the levels expected of them. “The most obvious one at this moment in time who is not in the team is Enzo Fernandez.”
Fernandez has found himself sidelined as his role in Chelsea’s midfield continues to diminish, and Souness’ remarks highlight growing frustration with the club’s expensive recruitment policy. The question remains whether Fernandez can rediscover his form and justify his hefty price tag, or if his time at Chelsea will be remembered as another example of wasted investment.
