Nigeria’s national grid collapses again due to technical issues – TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has explained that the latest collapse of the national grid, which occurred at 1:52 pm on Tuesday, was caused by a series of technical failures, including tripping lines and generators.

TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, clarified in a statement that the collapse was partial, not total, and that a significant portion of the grid remained unaffected. According to data from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, Osun State, the incident caused instability, which led to disruptions in power supply.

“The grid collapse was a result of a series of line and generator trippings that caused instability,” the statement said. “This led to the partial disturbance of the system. However, parts of the grid were not affected by the disruption, and restoration efforts began immediately.”

Bulk power supply to Abuja was restored by 2:49 pm, just under an hour after the collapse, and TCN engineers are actively working to restore power to other affected areas across the country. “We are gradually restoring bulk power supply to other parts of Nigeria,” the company said.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company also confirmed the grid collapse in a notice to its customers on Tuesday. At the time of the report, some parts of Abuja were still experiencing power outages.

This marks the ninth time the national grid has collapsed in 2024, leading to widespread blackouts across the country. Additionally, parts of Northern Nigeria have been in darkness for weeks due to the vandalism of TCN facilities in the region.

The frequent grid collapses have raised concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with calls for urgent upgrades and better maintenance of critical power facilities.
