Zamfara Rep Suleiman Gummi leaves PDP for APC
Suleiman Abubakar Gummi, the representative for the Gummi/Bukkuyum federal constituency in Zamfara State, has officially switched his allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gummi, who was elected under the PDP banner, cited ongoing internal conflicts within the party as his reason for leaving. His defection letter was presented during the plenary session on Wednesday by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
In his letter, Gummi pointed to the removal of the party chairman in his local government, which has led to a split and the emergence of two chairmen. He stated that this situation has made it challenging for the party to function democratically.
However, the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, urged the Speaker to declare Gummi’s seat vacant, arguing that the reasons given do not constitute a political crisis as defined by the Supreme Court. He emphasized that the law is clear regarding the consequences for members who leave the party that sponsored them.
Chinda stated, “The whole world is watching the Speaker to do the right thing in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and Oath of Office.”
