Deadly shootings in Anambra leave multiple casualties
A shooting incident in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, on Thursday morning has resulted in several fatalities, according to sources speaking to DAILY POST.
The shootings occurred around 9:15 a.m. in Ifite Awka, an area predominantly populated by students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Witnesses suggest that the violence may be related to ongoing cult activities.
This tragedy follows a recent incident in Nibo, a nearby town, where at least 12 people were killed in a cult-related shooting just last Sunday.
One witness reported, “Gunmen just shot a guy a few minutes ago at Ifite, Awka. He’s lying lifeless.” Another eyewitness, a lecturer, stated that she saw seven lifeless bodies in the vicinity and chose to turn back rather than continue to school.
The exact number of victims remains unclear. Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Public Relations Officer, did not confirm the incident but stated that a police response team has taken over the scene, with more information to follow.
Ikenga also mentioned that the police have intercepted videos and voice notes on social media indicating plans for violence in Awka. He noted, “The Anambra State Police Command is investigating these threats and will not take them lightly. We are committed to maintaining law and order and protecting the rights of citizens.”
He added that police and security forces have intensified patrols and surveillance to ensure public safety in the state.
